Author Datu Michael Ong Mastura dives deep into the history of the Magindanao Sultanate in the new book, The Rulers of Magindanao in Modern History, 1515-1903: Continuity and Change in a Traditional Realm in the Southern Philippines. The book opens with the question, "How likely was it that the ancient Filipinos developed a concept of statehood at pre-colonial contact?" From there, Mastura draws on various sources, including the luwaran (code) and tarsila (genealogy) to reconstruct a dynastic history of the southern Philippines across 388 years.

Author Heriberto Ruiz Tafoya delves into the consumption of packaged food diets in the global south, with a focus on Metro Manila slums. The Ateneo University Press launched on the eve of the 37th anniversary of the 1986 People Power Revolution its newest Marcos and Martial Law-related title, False Nostalgia: The Marcos "Golden Age" Myths and How to Debunk Them. Written by economist and University of the Philippines assistant professor Jan Carlo Punongbayan, the book was officially launched at the UP School of Economics Auditorium, UP Diliman, Quezon City, and joined by Emmanuel De Dios, Marites Dañguilan Vitug, and Mona Magno-Veluz who served as discussants for the event.

De Jesus and Ivyrose S. Baysic, Martial Law in the Philippines is composed of essays revisiting the martial law regime imposed by Ferdinand Marcos Sr. fifty years ago. This book provides information and analyses of its legacy of complex and contentious issues that still require resolution.

HOT OFF THE PRESS—An anthology about the pandemic response in the Philippines is now available at the Ateneo University Press.

Titled Lockdown and Lowdown: The Politics of COVID-19 Pandemic Response in the Philippines, this compendium presents accounts of the COVID-19 pandemic response from the perspective of local governments within the frame of national-local political relations and exigent arrangements under a state of emergency. The specific measures pursued by the government—lockdowns, testing, isolation, emergency assistance, and vaccination—are discussed by examining how national guidelines set by the Inter-Agency Task Force on Emerging Infectious Diseases are carried out by local government units. Simultaneously, the roles of the military, police, and academic institutions present on the ground and the plight of overseas Filipino workers are highlighted to illustrate the pandemic’s sector-specific concerns.
