This book tells the stories of elderly Filipinos and the accounts of their daily activities, their families, their communities, the regular pursuits they can still manage, such as going to church, joining exercise classes, or attending senior citizens’ meetings. In short, these pages give a snapshot of our elders’ everyday lives from the time they wake up until they go to sleep at night, managing the various factors that determine the quality of life for Filipinos aged sixty and above.
Medical anthropologist Mary Ann J. Ladia uses data from field research to argue that even if social structures for the elderly already exist, these are haphazardly designed, if not ignored and left unimplemented by authorities. Written not only for health workers and policy makers but also for families and friends of the elderly, the book provokes the question, “What can be done to uphold the dignity of our senior citizens?”
