Applying sociological theory to the analysis of everyday social and political events, Carroll challenges the Catholic Church, elites, civil society, and grass-roots groups to attack and rectify the appalling imbalance of power and benefits in Philippine society.

The second volume, Engaging Society II: Musings of an Oxymoron, was published by Ateneo de Manila University Press in 2014.
